Discipline procedures

Routine matters of discipline are handled by teachers in the classroom. Warnings are generally issued for minor offences. Major disciplinary matters are brought to the attention of the Vice Principal.

All facets of the offence are carefully considered and the student is given the opportunity to explain his/her actions. Parents are always informed of major rule violations. Offences which are considered to be major may result in suspension or withdrawal from the school.

All persons are treated as individuals and no two situations are the same. The principles of fairness and compassion are always applied. Disciplinary actions are considered 'consequences' as opposed to 'punishments'.

Discipline Consequences Detentions

For minor infractions, a student may be required to serve a detention during the lunch break.

Infractions of a more serious nature may require additional lunch break detentions.

Probation

A student may be placed on probation for an accumulation of minor violations. Parents will be informed of actions that have led to this decision.

Suspension

A student may be suspended for serious offences such as fighting, or repeated bullying, at the discretion of the Principal. The school bears no responsibility for academic work during the period of suspension beyond supplying work on request.

Student Attendance

Students are required to attend school daily. Regular attendance and punctuality contribute greatly to the student's progress at school..

Students are not permitted to leave the school building or grounds during the school day.

When a student must be absent from school, it is important that the parent phone the school, after 8: 15 a .m. and advise Ms. Kim, the school secretary.

Student Dress Regulations

Students are required to wear their school uniforms while at school. On days when there is no Physical Education, a white shirt, tie and school jacket or school sweater is to be worn. On days when the student has Physical Education, the Green Sports jacket and pants may be worn. Hats or caps are not part of the school uniform and are not to be worn in class.

Reporting to Parents

During the school year, parents will receive three formal written reports that inform them of how well their child has achieved the term curriculum goals, how they can improve their work, and how the teacher, along with the student and parent, plans to help the child achieve a set goal for the following term.

Parents are encouraged to meet with their child's classroom teacher whenever the need arises.

Student Lockers

Students in grades 4 to 9 are issued a key for their Insert Pic locker. If a student loses his/her key, a new key will be issued at replacement cost.

Personal Belongings

Expensive items should be left at home. The school cannot assume responsibility for loss of and/or damage to personal property brought to school. If students choose to bring such items to school they do so at their own risk.

Books & School Equipment

Textbooks used by students remain the property of the school.

Students are expected to take care of all school materials.

Students will be responsible for payment of lost or damaged items.

First Aid

Minor cuts and scrapes will be cleaned and treated. More serious injuries are assessed and given first aid by staff members with emergency first aid training. An agreement has been established with the Hospital opposite the school to treat any student who has serious injuries such as a broken bone. Parents will also be contacted.

It is the school policy to contact parents of students who feel sick at school so that the parent may decide if the student is to remain at school or to go home.

Medications

If medications are to be administered to a student by a staff member, parents must send a note with clear directions. If a student is taking medication with the parent's permission, please send a note to the teacher.

The school maintains a Medical Alert File and an emergency treatment plan for students with potentially life-threatening conditions or allergies. If your child has a life-threatening allergy, it is your responsibility to advise the school.

Fire & Earthquake Drills

Fire Drills are conducted throughout the year.

When the alarm sounds, students leave the classroom in a silent single line at the direction of their teacher. Once outside the building, students will assemble in their assigned area where teachers will take attendance. An earthquake drill will be held during the school year. While Dalian is not in an earthquake zone, it is important that students be aware of the procedure to be followed if they are ever in an earthquake. When the alarm sounds, teachers will instruct children to take cover, under a desk. Students count to 'sixty'. At the teacher's direction, approximately one minute later, students will leave the classroom and follow the same routine used for fire drills

The parent of a student who deliberately damages or vandalizes seats or any other equipment on a school bus shall be financially responsible for any repair costs.

Mobile Phones
